Margie was most-likely born in 1998. She was an American Quarter Horse. She was saved from slaughter when HiCaliber purchased her from Ontario Auction on November 22, 2016. In 2018, when HiCaliber announced they were closing, she was one of many unrideable horses (AKA “companion horses” or “pasture puffs”) that desperately needed to find a safe landing. Margie arrived at the ranch on December 2, 2018.

Margie had several arthritic joints. Unfortunately, soon after she arrived, we found that she did not tolerate Equioxx long-term. In spite of this, she initially remained comfortable on a daily basis. While in our care, we sedated her and provided pain medication for farrier work.

As she aged, she required Bute on a daily basis and farrier trims became increasingly challenging. We were so grateful to our farrier, Ray Fleury, for the extraordinary efforts he put into her trims. As a result, we stretched out the time between farrier trims as much as possible. In the last couple of years she lost muscle mass, especially along her topline. Unfortunately, even a high protein diet wasn’t enough to improve her body condition, although we were able to maintain her at an acceptable level.

 

Farewell Date: July 10, 2026

 

On July 10, 2026 Dr. Rivett determined that Margie’s ability to maintain her balance and our ability to manage her pain no longer allowed her to be safely trimmed. In order to avoid a catastrophic fall or injury the heartbreaking decision was made to choose humane euthanasia.

Margie was one of the sweetest mares at the ranch. She absolutely loved being groomed. She gave some of the best hugs of any horse, although her favorite treat was rubbing her face on you. Although we do not know her history, we know she thrived with equine companions. She shared her corral, and her heart, with Scampi and Rocky.

Rest easy sweet Margie, you deserve nothing but green grass and rainbows!
