Justice

Arrival Date: February 27, 2026

 

Justice came to Horses of Tir Na Nog on February 27, 2026.  He was one of six horses taken in that day from a local rescue that had closed.  He is a 31-year-old retired racehorse.

After coming to our sanctuary, this boy has been thriving.  He loves living with "Da Boys," our gelding group made up of Twister, Chocolate Chip, Frankie, Gulli, and Doc. This group includes several horses in his age group. At the time, Twister was 31 and our oldest horse, Doc was 38.

Justice also has vision loss, a trait he shares with our blind appaloosa, Chocolate Chip. These boys all take care of each other.

As an elderly horse, Justice requires special care.

Despite his age, he has such a young spirit. He loves to run around and play with his friends.

We are honored that we are able to provide him a safe, loving, forever home at Horses of Tir Na Nog.

 

Farewell Date: June 5, 2026

On the night on June 5, 2026, we lost Justice. He passed away on his own overnight. We were completely shocked by his passing as Friday night he was doing well, eating and drinking and hanging out with his boys.

Justice had only arrived a few months earlier on February 27, 2026. He was one of six horses that came into our care when a local rescue closed. He had been transferred into the care of that rescue by County of San Diego Department of Animal Services in 2022 with his buddy Sol.

He arrived in our care as a thirty-one-year-old retired racehorse. In spite of his advanced age, it was clear he had a young heart. What was amazing about Justice was how well he integrated into “Da Boyz,” our large gelding corral.

Over the years we have tried to introduce several new geldings to this group. Not everyone has proven to be a good fit. Da Boyz are an active, extroverted group prone to mischief. Several geldings have found their antics overwhelming. Others, given time, have connected well with one or two of the established geldings. Justice was completely unique. The group accepted him immediately.

Initially he was drawn to Chocolate Chip, which we thought was wonderful since Chocolate Chip’s blindness always raises concerns with introduction. But soon after joining the group. Twister’s behavior changed dramatically. He had to be with Justice all of the time. We hadn’t seen Twister bond with another horse since we lost his sidekick Buddy in 2024. Justice and Twister were simply inseparable. It was such a beautiful friendship to see.

Anyone observing these two friends would have sworn that they had known each other previously. That was how instantly and deeply they bonded. Of course, it is very unlikely that a retired Border Patrol Agent and an off-track thoroughbred ever met before.

This incredible friendship made Justice’s sudden, unexpected passing so heartbreaking. Even though Justice was 31 years old when he passed, we had hoped he would have had years with us and years with his friend Twister. Please keep Twister in your thoughts as he mourns the loss of his friend.

We are grateful that Twister has the rest of Da Boyz to keep him active and busy. We hope that Justice has rejoined his buddy Sol and is telling him all about Da Boyz. We would love to hear him describe his new-found group of friends.
