Coco and Petey arrived at the ranch on October 16, 2021. They were part of a long-term County of San Diego Department of Animal Services case. Coco had not had an easy life. Her brands suggested that she was a recipient mare. She would have had embryos transferred to her from another mare, carrying the foal to term and then nursing the foal until it was weaned. Her left shoulder is terribly atrophied as a result of nerve damage. Her left knee and both hocks were arthritic. Fortunately, daily pain medication provided her with a high quality of life over the last two years. Coco arrived with Petey in October 2021, as part of a Department of Animal Services case.  She was under-weight when she arrived, but not as thin as Petey.  As a result., she achieved her goal weight more quickly.

She lived with her boyfriend, Petey. She loved people and lived her life in comfort at the ranch.262134734 4787903927957089 2001498692804751305 N

 

Farewell Date:  November 9, 2023

 

On October 23, she was in-appetent and had a very high heartrate. Since then, her heartrate returned to normal. Blood tests were fairly normal, as was her EKG. Her reduced appetite had left us concerned.

On the morning of November 9, Alena found Coco unable to stand. We administered medication. With Dr. Harlan's help we got her up. Unfortunately, once she was up it was clear that she was in trouble. Dr. Harlan used the EKG to track her elevated heart rate and the changes since the last EKG. There were profound neurological issues in her hind legs.
While we do not know the exact nature of her heart issues, we suspect the issues reoccurred. It is likely these issues compromised blood flow to her hind legs. Her legs were so weakened she could not ambulate. It was unlikely her legs would regain their strength and function.
As dramatic as her change was, we are grateful for the comfort she had experienced during the last couple of weeks. Thanks to Alena, Coco had been enjoying extra servings of senior grain at each meal. And of course, her days were filled with extra attention from the love of her life, Petey. He hadn't left her side since October 23.
We are grateful for the prayers and healing thoughts sent Coco. Please send love to Petey. He was with Coco when she passed, but it was hard.
