In June 2022, three new equine residents arrived at the ranch. Their owner had passed away leaving no one to care for them. County of San Diego Department of Animal Services rescued them and asked if we could provide them with a forever home.
One was a mare in her twenties. She has several melanomas which are very common in grey horses. She also appears to have a severe fly allergy so we work hard to keep her comfortable during fly season.
She also has heavy scar tissue on her left front leg. We initially treated it pretty aggressively but the treatments failed to reduce the damaged tissue. Since it does not appear to bother her, we are continuing to monitor it.
Since their names were lost with the passing of their owner, their new names were provided by three of our generous donors. Windansea captures this mare’s personality perfectly! She is beautiful and enchanting, but like most mares, has a stormy side too.
Windandsea was very bonded to a gelding that arrived with her, named Remiatte by another donor. Sadly, on January 8, 2023 we lost Remiatte to kidney disease/failure. Windansea has adjusted to his loss. While she enjoys flirting with her neighbors, Rio and Keno, she really thrives on the attention of volunteers.
