In October of 2020 a local rescue/therapy center was downsizing due to sponsorship losses. We agreed to take two of their horses, Gracie and Valentine. Valentine is an American Quarter Horse/Mountain Pleasure Horse cross. Valentine came to the rescue/therapy center over fours years earlier in very bad shape and extremely fearful. She was given great care and was doing much better when she came into our care.
She is still slow to trust new people but puts effort into making the right choices. The rescue thought they had an adopter lined up for her, so in order not to over tax our resources, she did not come to the ranch with Gracie.
Valentine has Carpus Varus (outward deviation from the knee) in her right front leg. While it does not currently cause her discomfort, the rescue recognized that she shouldn’t be ridden in order to preserve her quality of life for as long as possible. This decision ended the potential adopter’s interest, but was a true gift to Valentine!
