Scampi arrived at the ranch on February 19, 2023. We had been approached by one of our veterinarians about an older mare who had a fantastic, loving home. Unfortunately, heath issues necessitated that her owners move to Texas to be closer to family. While older, with health issues of her own, Dr. Manring did not feel that euthanasia was medically appropriate for Scampi at the time.
When we spoke to Scampi’s owners we discovered that they had adopted her from a local rescue, Falcon Ridge on March 30, 2018. According to Falcon Ridge, Scampi had been abandoned on a property in Valley Center and their trainer had picked her up. They believe she was born in 2001. While she was initially thought to be an American Quarter Horse, Dr. Manring identified her as an Arabian mare. So, we consider her an Arabian-Quarter Horse cross.
She has a head tilt from an arthritic vertebrae in her neck. This doesn’t seem to cause her any pain and gives her an adorable appearance that fits her sweet personality. She also has Cushing’s disease which we manage with Prascend.
She came to us a bit underweight and proved very challenging to add weight to. She surprised us all by flourishing once she moved in with Rocky and Margie full-time. We are so happy she found her best friends!
