Meet Ms. Ruby Red. County of San Diego Department of Animal Services rescued Ms. Ruby Red in April of 2018. She was terribly obese at the time. Her weight, combined with a lack of hoof care, left her with laminitis (inflammation in her feet). She was placed with us and we continued her her weight-loss program and helped her feet to recover.
Fortunately, she is now at a much healthier weight. Given repeated colic episodes, we suspect she struggles with stomach ulcers, so she receives a daily supplement to address this. Over the years, we have pieced together bits of her story. We suspect that Ms. Ruby was a bottle-raised baby. So, she was never taught any horse etiquette by her momma. This etiquette provides an important foundation for horses interacting with people. As a result, her interactions with people can be very awkward.
In addition, she is a "cribber." Cribbing is a stress behavior detrimental to horses' overall health. Cribbing is also a very difficult behavior to break, so Ms. Ruby and Jasmine live togetehr in an anti-cribbing corral.
Ms. Ruby Red always loves to stick her tongue out. We are so glad that Jasmine is always there to offer her support.
