Maxwell came to the ranch in May 2020, with his BFF Hoss. They transferred to our care from a local rescue that was downsizing their operations.
Maxwell, “Max” was a County of San Diego Department of Animal Services case a few years earlier when he was found running loose through the Tijuana River Valley as an intact stallion. He has pretty significant proprioceptic deficits, an evaluation of the horse’s awareness of where he is in space. These deficits are the first signs of neurologic problems. Signs of ataxia in Max are readily evident when you watch his hind legs, they move as though they are not connected to his front legs. We’re glad to offer him a spot at the sanctuary where he won’t be ridden.
Nathan works with Max regularly to help build his trust and confidence in people. Fortunately, the quiet, calm environment at the ranch has proven beneficial for Max. He and Hoss spend a lot of time playing, which warms our hearts.
