On June 24, 2018 two equines came into our care from County of San Diego Department of Animal Services. The owners had been taken into custody and their family members were unable to help with the care of the two horses, two pigs, one dog, two hens and a rooster. All of the animals were taken into Animal Services custody for their own protection so that adequate care could be provided.
The two equines were a blind Appaloosa gelding and his buddy, a twenty-five year old little “seeing eye" pony with Cushing’s disease. A week after their arrival we learned that the pony was also blind. Soon after coming into our care, the blind Appaloosa was sponsored by JoAnn and Amanda and given the name Wyoming. While his pony buddy did not find a sponsor, we named him Cody.
Wyoming is not able to see well due to equine recurrent uveitis (moon blindness). While we can treat flareups, the condition cannot be reversed and worsens over time. While he is blind, he is an active boy who loves playing with his corral buddies.
We lost Cody unexpectedly on April 10, 2021. This was hard for Wyoming. Fortunately, Wyoming continues to be surrounded by friends and shares his corral with Valentine, Billy, and Maple.
