Remiatte
Gender: Gelding
Breed: American Quarter Horse
Approximate Date of Birth: 1/1/1990
Sponsor:On June 23, 2022, three equines and three goats entered our care from County of San Diego Department of Animal Services. Sadly, their owner had passed away, leaving no one to care for them. Two of the horses were a bonded pair, Windansea and Remiatte. Remiatte arrived with significant vision loss and underweight. After much-needed dental care, he gained back his missing weight.
In December his appetite declined. We scoped him and found evidence of past ulcers. We began treatment. We also moved him, and Windansea, to a different area of the ranch to have more horses around him. The move decreased his pacing but did not improve his eating. We hoped that additional dental care would help. We initially saw improvement however, that stopped so blood was drawn.
On Sunday, January 8, he refused breakfast. He spent the morning standing in the sunshine, not far from Windansea. However, by the afternoon we were concerned and checked his vitals. In spite of his calm, relaxed appearance his heartrate was elevated. We immediately reached out to Dr. Blanche from ECLAP. We also texted Dr. Harlan inquiring about results from the blood test.
Dr. Harlan tried to soften the news of the blood tests. Remiatte’s kidney values were high, indicative of kidney disease/failure. When Dr. Blanche arrived, she explained his white blood count was extremely high, in spite of already being on antibiotics. The damage to his kidneys could not be reversed. So, a major infection was more than he could recover from. As Dr. Blanche helped him cross the Rainbow Bridge, she speculated that Remiatte was hiding a lot of his symptoms from us until he simply couldn’t fight any longer.
Remiatte passed very peaceful, with Windansea close by and our volunteers surrounding him in love.
