Claude, a member of our Burro Brigade, was the third equine that arrived in June 2022 from County of San Diego Department of Animal Services. He was twenty-nine when he arrived. So, he became part of our group of senior burros.
He was a real sweetheart and reminded us a lot of our beloved Milton Burro, our very first burro.
Claude was named in honor of a major donor's father. The donor's father was a farrier. While many farriers prefer not to work with burros, we are confident that the donor's father would have enjoyed meeting this sweet burro.
Claude’s spine had begun causing him discomfort. Daily pain meds initially provided relief. Unfortunately, several weeks ago he had trouble standing one morning. Once we were able to get him up, we alerted Dr. Rivett and she added Gabapentin to his medication. While this definitely helped, the improvement wasn’t significant enough to resolve concerns about him being stuck down. Dr. Rivett was able to identify several concerning issues with his hind legs, even on very high medication dosing. In order to prevent Claude being stuck down and unable to stand, the decision was made to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge on July 10, 2026.
Claude was a very special fellow. He got along with all of the other senior burros. He absolutely loved being brushed by volunteers. We are grateful to Judith for all of the extra time she spent brushing this guy. Those of you who follow us on special media will recognize Claude from his countless “Tongue Out Tuesday” posting.
We are sure his best friend, Reno was waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge. We have no doubt that Reno quickly introduced Claude to her sister Keno, and all of the wonderful members of the Burro Brigade that crossed before him. The Rainbow Bridge has gained a very special burro.
