In December 2023, County of San Diego Department of Animal Services rescued a pair of bonded pigs. Unfortunately, as with so many pigs who find themselves in shelters, the boys began a very long wait hoping for a new home. 2023 became 2024 and 2024 turned into 2025.
During their stay at the shelter the boys were named Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble. We couldn't imagine better names for these two buddies.
In August 2025 we made plans for Fred and Barney to transfer to our care. Unfortunately at the end of August 2025, Fred experienced a heat stress episode before he could come to the ranch. In pigs, heat stress can lead to skin sloughing. This left Fred with a large wound on his right side.But, the staff at Animal Services did an amazing job caring for him and treating his wound. We cannot thank Dr. Sarvis and her team enough for all that they did to ensure Fred's recovery. We also include Dr. Blanche from ECLAP in our thanks. She lent her expertise and helped us understand Fred's medical needs.
Fred and Barney arrived at their forever home in November 2025. They both were very obese, so we have worked hard to keep them at a healthy weight. These boys are super friendly and love scratches. They have fit in well with the rest of our sounder of swine.
