In the spring of 2018 when HiCaliber Horse Rescue announced they were closing, Stephanie adopted Doug and renamed him Pax (“peace”). Stephanie was a very dear friend of the organization. She previously served as our Volunteer Coordinator and as a board member. She was a true advocate of our efforts.
Unfortunately, Stephanie was facing health challenges in 2019 that prevented her from spending time with her beautiful boy. So she made the very difficult decision to move him to the ranch. Although Stephanie lost her battle with cancer we are honored to be caring for Pax in her memory.
Farewell Date: May 12, 2026
On May 12, Pax suffered an intestinal torsion. Dr. Gonzales from ECLAP came out very quickly, but the only option was to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge. He would have been about 28 years old. We have been honored to care for him for nearly seven years.
We owe a special debt of gratitude to Dr Harlan for giving Pax the last few years of high quality life. Hock arthritis made it difficult for Pax to stand up after he had been lying down. Hock injections worked wonders for Pax. Thank you Dr. Harlan for administering them and to all of you that make this level of veterinary care possible for horses like Pax.
The heartbreak of losing this gentle boy reminded us of the circumstances that brought him into our care. As you know, most of our horses come to us from Animal Services. As shared above, Pax was a rare exception to that rule. He will be sorely missed.
