My Story

In November 2013, County of San Diego Department of Animal Services rescued a stray mare along the U.S.-Mexico border. She was covered with ticks, underweight, and had a misshapen hoof. X-rays revealed a birth defect that made her unable to carry riders.

After two months of efforts to find her a home, Animal Services placed her with Horses of Tir Na Nog as an alternative to euthanasia. She arrived just in time for Chinese New Year -- the Year of the Horse.

She received a Chinese name, Qianli Ma, "A horse that covers great distances." It is a complimentary phrase for a capable, tenacious person.

Qianli Ma gained weight steadily. On April 27, 2014, her weight shifted dramatically, leading to the diagnosis of a late-term, high risk pregnancy. Twelve days later, on May 9, Qianli Ma defied the odds and gave birth to a healthy filly.

At a special 100 Day Celebration in August 2014, the little filly was given the name Zhen Zhen, meaning, "Very precious." The name was chosen by our donors and could not be more perfect for our special girl.

As Zhen Zhen approaches her first birthday, we are working with our veterinarian team to determine if there are neurologic issues that are impacting her muscular-skeletal development. In the meantime, she is content to spend her days soaking up the sunshine, growing taller and stronger, and being loved and cared for by our wonderful volunteers.
