In October of 2009, a 20-year-old horse named Beckett was discovered in a pasture in Crest. County of San Diego Department of Animal Services responded to a call from a concerned citizen who saw Beckett and their investigation led to us. The owner had told a friend that she had placed Beckett with us. The owner later admitted to abandoning him. When Beckett arrived at the Animal Services’ shelter, he was lame on all four legs and had old wounds and healing lacerations. Undiagnosed lameness makes him unadoptable.
Although we suspect arthritis, possibly ring bone, we have found that careful hoof trimming has significantly improved Beckett’s comfort. Once his feet weren’t hurting, we discovered that Becket is a real cuddle bug. Although he approaches people with his ears back, he really enjoys being petted and groomed by our volunteers. It is hard to resist this big red fellow with his bold white blaze.
2009 presented economic challenges for many people, but it is impossible to understand when abandoning an animal becomes an acceptable option. Hopefully Beckett can raise awareness of the unwanted horse crisis and its most vulnerable victims. Although Beckett traveled a tough road to get to us, we’re glad he made it safely to Horses of Tir Na Nog.
